After eight years of waiting, the original European specification smart car is finally available in the US. Since 1998, when Mercedes-Benz, in partnership with the Swatch Watch company launched the revolutionary "Swatchmobile City Car" in Europe, more than 750,000 Smart cars have been sold worldwide. It's become the icon of a new generation and even a movie star, seen in films like "The DaVinci Code," "The Pink Panther," and Russel Crowe and Woody Allen's latest films. The smart is safe, stylish, whimisical, fun to drive, environmentally friendly, and just plain smart. It's the most attention getting and endearing micro car on the planet. The smart was even selected by the Museum of Modern Art to be in it's automotive design collection. And, it's among the highest mile per gallon cars available anywhere on Earth.

Smart, is a division of DaimlerChrysler. Smart cars are sold through a mix of Mercedes-Benz and stand-alone smart dealerships in over 36 countries throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America, Japan, Australia, South Africa and China. However, they haven't been available in the U.S. until now.

In the first half of 2008, the Penske Auto Group plans to open a new network of dealerships in the US and will begin selling an American version of the smart car. The new smart is different from the traditional European Smart. The US smart has a more angular look to it. It has a longer front end, is slightly wider and heavier and has a Mitsubishi non turbo-charged engine with a 5-speed transmission. The European smart car we sell has a Mercedes-Benz turbo-charged engine with a 6-speed. After test driving both cars, many report that the Mercedes Benz engine smart is quicker than the Mitsubishi engine smart, while also getting better mileage per gallon. Other changes to next year's smart appear to be catering to mainstream American tastes, rather than European tastes. For example, the smart's swoopy rounded cockpit design is more conservative.... a little like the Mini Cooper dashboard. The smart exterior is more angular and somewhat less "huggable." The marketing department of PAG says the price for an entry level "Pure" (no AC, wind up windows, radio, sunroof, auto transmission) will start at $12,000 plus destination charges and options, which will put it in direct competition with the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fits. However, the European smart car we sell are only the premium models - the "Passion" and "Pulse" - and they come "fully loaded." They are priced in North America at prices comparable to the BMW Mini.

All of the smart cars we offer are new, imported from Mercedes Benz/Smart Germany by the Southern California company Defiance/ G & K Auto Conversions. The cars are then modified to meet all U.S. safety and emissions regulations.

In business since 1979, G & K Auto Conversions is the largest and oldest auto engineering conversion company in the United States specializing in exotic European cars. They've modified in excess of 8,000 vehicle in their 40,000 sq ft Southern California facility and have a sterling reputation with EPA/DOT and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). They are an Independent Commercial Importer (ICI) for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and are a registered importer (RI) for the Department of Transportation. Their in-house testing laboratory is recognized by the EPA and licensed by the CARB.

In addition to crash testing, each smart is modified by hand, inspected then certified by the EPA, DOT, and NHTSA. The process costs over $6,000 per smart and takes many months to complete. Each smart is titled in the state of Missouri with US Title, making it easy to register in any state. However, if you live in California, New York, Massachusettes or Vermont you may need additional emissions certification work done to the smart. Contact us for details.

Beware of used or "grey market" smarts that have not been converted to satisfy U.S. safety and emissions standards.

Our smart cars are shipped to Bozeman via premium car carrier service Accelerated Logistics. Because the cars have been modified leaving the smart factory, the Montana Motor Vehicle department requires us to sell them as "used cars", althought they have never been pre-owned or driven.

While a number of insurance companies will underwrite a European smart, we recommend Farmer's Insurance for insurance. Financing can be challenging, since the smart is not yet rated by Kelly Blue Book for it's residual values. accordingly, we recommend financing via www.eloan.com.

The Smart fortwo comes in three "trim" levels. We offer only the fully featured Passion and Pulse models:

Pure (not available in the US) - The "budget" smart has a smaller 50 HP engine, a "Softip" manual transmission, steel wheels, steel roof, black painted trideon safety cell, cassette radio with 2 speakers, and no air conditioning or power windows / doorlocks.

Passion - This "top of the line" smart includes the more powerful Mercedes-Benz 61 HP turbocharged, intercooled, 3-cylinder gas engine, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with hill start assist, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution, acceleration skid control, brake assist, dual-circuit brake system with servo-assistance, disk brakes at front, drum brakes at rear. Together, the Mercedes-Benz engineered computer assists make the smart stable on the slipperiest of Montana roads - even on snow and ice. The Passion Coupe sells for $24,995 and comes in jet black, river silver, bay gray, lite white, phat red, ruby red metallic, star blue and stream green. The very rare Cabrio typically sells for $29,995.

F1 Pulse - The Smart "F1 PULSE" Coupe is the "sports car" smart. It boasts all the features of the "Passion" plus paddle shifters on the steering column, dash mounted tachometer and clock, wide 6 spoke alloy wheels and performance tires, black and blue interior and matt black trim.

The Passion includes air conditioning with exterior temperature indicator and frost warning, "styleline" alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and gear knob, Softouch automatic transmission with 6-speed sequential gear program and kickdown function, drive lock auto activation of the central locking system when driving, comfort windscreen wipers, power windows and keyless remote entry door locks, driveway illumination, interior in bungee grey, glass roof, luggage compartment cover, storage nets in doors, tridion safety cell in silver, radiator grill in silver, door mirror casing in silver, bicolor reaar lights, driver and passenger airbags, power windows and door locks.

We generally have a selection of 8-12 smart cars at our Bozeman showroom. Additional colors are available by special order. We can have a smart car painted to your special requirements for an additional charge, or have your smart car wrapped in vinyl graphics to create an attention getting rolling billboard.

About the Warranty

Once a smart car is imported from Europe into the U.S., the original smart manufacturer's warranty is no longer valid. This is typical for any imported car not sold through the manufacturer's own franchise. Once a car is modified to meet US compliance, the State of Montana requires us to sell it as a "used" car, even though it's never been driven or owned by anyone other than Eco Auto Inc. The cars are new in all other respects.

The Registered Importer (The Defiance Company / G&K Auto Conversions) warranties the emission control systems for a period of 2 years/24K miles, 5 years/50K miles, and 8 Years/80K miles. G&K also warrants for a period of 10 years the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety and bumper standard equipment. An additional extended bumper to bumper service contract by ACSC (Automobile Consumer Service Corporation) is available for 4 years for $1,000.

The tires come with their own factory warranty. Warranty service locations are not limited to specific locations or dealerships. Warranty repairs can be done by any trained European mechanic (if available). Oil changes, lube, brakes, and other routine service work can be done at most standard service facilies who handle European cars.
